When you find out there is a serial killer themed hotel in a historic building in a ghost town surrounded by gold mines, pioneer cemeteries and down the road from one of the most famous historical brothels in the country...you pack your coffin and head to freakin Colorado. The Black Monarch hotel was the initial reason I headed to Victor, CO. It became important almost immediately for me to investigate this historic saloon and gentleman's club that had sat empty for so many years and to see it on it's journey as owner Adam Zimmerli transforms it into one of the most unique and macabre hotels in the country. What I wasn't expecting was to become obsessed with the historical stories that the town of Victor possessed. I needed to understand what it would have been like to live there in the 1800s, working as a miner, or as the wife of a miner or as the infamous serial killer Harry Orchard who committed one of his most notorious crimes there. I needed to walk amongst the graves of the miners turned soldiers who died in one of the world wars or to read the names of the hundreds of children that perished in the town due to one of the many, many diseases that had swept through it. I wanted to visit the nests of all the soiled doves in Teller county; to try and learn something about the enigma that was Pearl De Vere and to pay my respects to the women that made a fortune off the wealthy men in town, despite how hard the work would have been. I'd hoped to meet or feel one of them in the halls of these centuries old building but I left with more memories and experiences than I could have ever dreamt. _______________________________________________________________ Thank you to the countless people of Victor and Cripple Creek, CO who welcomed me with open arms and shared your stories, your history, your passion.
